Utkal Express engine driver averts tragedy
GWALIOR: The presence of mind of the engine driver of Puri-bound Utkal Express prevented a major mishap as the engine of the train caught fire between Sithauli and Sandalpur railway stations on Sunday night. Railway sources said noticing the fire, the engine driver cut off the engine from other bogies and prevented them from being engulfed by the fire. No loss of life was reported.
TN police station ransacked
CHENNAI: A 20-member group of persons, claiming to belong to `Tamilnadu Viduthalai Iyyakam’ (Tamil Nadu Freedom Movement), carrying deadly weapons, attacked the Andimadam police station in Tamil Nadu’s Perumbalur district, late on Sunday night. After threatening police officials at the station and snapping the telephone lines, the group walked away with rifles, bullets, a radio communication equipment and a tape recorder.
Karnataka bans child labour
BANGALORE: The Karnataka Government, heeding the National Human Rights Commission plea, has decided to ban government officials from employing children below 14 years as servants in their houses. The government has decided to amend the civil services conduct rules to give effect to the ban.
ATTF to boycott August 15 fete
AGARTALA: The banned All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) will boycott the 50th Independence Day celebrations in Tripura and has called upon the tribals to observe the day as `Black Day.’ A four-page leaflet distributed by the Tripura Tribal Peoples Democratic Front, the political wing of the ATTF, called upon the tribals to drive out non-tribals who had entered the state after 1951. “August 15 is a black day for us, it said.
Donation for quake victims by BJP
NEW DELHI: The BJP Members of Parliament will donate their one day’s salary to the victims of the Jabalpur earthquake, it was decided at the general body meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Party held here on Monday. The meeting condoled the deaths in the earthquake, the recent Uphaar cinema fire tragedy in Delhi and the train accident near Bhatinda.
