With several IPL franchises claiming that they were not able to maintain a consistent image with their fans with the constant player churn, they were given a bit of a respite by the latest IPL governing council decision.
Now,each franchises will be allowed to retain five cricketers during the 2014 seasons auction to be held on February 12. Teams will also be provided with a new right to match provision for a limited number of players .
A franchise may sign up to a maximum of 5 players who were in its squad in 2013,including those who were unavailable during the season or replacements, a BCCI release said. Regarding salary cap,the franchises will be charged Rs 12.5 crore,Rs 9.5 crore,Rs 7.5 crore,Rs 5.5 crore and Rs 4 crore for respectively the first, second, third, fourth and fifth capped players retained and it would be irrespective of the IPL league fee that is agreed between the two parties and which is set out in the player contract.
Apart from the cricketers who are retained in advance, all other players will have to enter the auction. This year the franchise will have a number of rights to match for those players who were in its squad in 2013.
The number of rights to match available to a franchise will depend on the number of players that the franchise retained in advance, the release said. If the number of players retained by a franchise prior to the auction is five, four or three then the number of rights to match in the auction will be one. But if the number of players retained is two,one and zero then the number of rights to match for the franchise will be two,two and three respectively, the release said.
According to the regulation,if the franchise chooses to exercise the right to match, the franchise will take the player for the amount of the final bid that had been made in the Player Auction,no further bidding by any other franchises is possible and franchises may take no more than four capped Indian players via a combination of retention prior to the auction and the right to match.
Each squad must include no less than 16 and no more than 27 players,of which up to 9 may be overseas players and no more than 4 overseas players in the XI for any match, the statement added.
BCCI meet to discuss Modi,RCA
Kolkata: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called an emergent working committee meeting in Chennai on Saturday to discuss Lalit Modis re-entry to cricket administration by way of contesting the Rajasthan Cricket Associations (RCA) election.
The banned former IPL chairman was in race to be the RCA president after getting the go-ahead from the Supreme Court. Results are awaited on January 6.
We will discuss the issues related to Modi and RCA. We had already informed them (RCA) about our strong reservations against allowing someone, whos banned for life,to contest the poll. Now weve to take a decision. Accordingly,a circular has been sent to all BCCI-affiliated units, informing them about the emergent working committee meeting on December 28, said a top cricket board official.
It is learnt that the working committee might send the matter to the disciplinary committee as Modi was banned on charges of indiscipline and misconduct. Subsequently a special general meeting (SGM) would be called. Only an SGM can ban or suspend a state association or affiliated unit. Thats the rule, said a BCCI vice-president. A two-third majority is required at the SGM to ban a member association. So,the Saturdays working committee meeting will also allow all parties concerned to check the numbers.
