Ricky Ponting hopes the exclusion of Mike Hussey won’t hurt Australia after reports say the batsman has recovered from a hamstring injury and could have played in the defending champion’s second game of the tournament on Friday.

Hussey – Australia’s highest-ranked ODI batsman at No. 4 – was left out of the squad but said he should have gone and been given a chance to return to full fitness.

Australia captain Ponting said: “We’re disappointed for him (Hussey) as well but all we can do is move forward and move on with the squad of players we have got.” Ponting said “hopefully it won’t come back and hurt us at all,” adding selectors felt Hussey wasn’t fit enough.

Australia plays New Zealand on Friday in Group A.
