East Bengal,of late, have been hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons and on Thursday, coming on the back of a nightmarish IFA Shield campaign, the red-and-golds seemed to be falling apart. During a practice match at the clubs ground,Brazilian striker Edmilson Marques got involved in an ugly brawl with his team mate Saheb Ali Mondal and coach Subhas Bhowmick. Skipper Rahim Nabi and senior player Soumik Dey had to intervene.
The incident was sparked when Edmilson was at the receiving end of a rough tackle by Mondal. The Brazilian retaliated and there was a scuffle between the two. Bhowmick, who was acting as referee, gave Edmilson marching orders but the player turned on the coach instead. Things got worse in the dressing room, according to sources, where Dey and Edmilson nearly came to blows.
The clubs football secretary Santosh Bhattacharya blamed Edmilson for the chaos. He crossed the limit,he should have obeyed the coachs order, Bhattacharya told The Indian Express. It was an act of insubordination and we will issue a show-cause notice asking him to explain his behaviour.
East Bengals next assignment is the Durand Cup in New Delhi and the team will leave on September 14. Edmilson is unlikely to be a part of the touring party.
