Three miners died of carbon monoxide poisoning and six others were missing in a lead-zinc mine in northwest China’s Gansu Province,officials said on Thursday.
The Changba Lead-Zinc Mine near the city of Longnan said it failed to contact three staff members conducting daily inspections in the mine at 9 am yesterday.
Later they sent six inspectors underground to check the situation. Two returned to the surface,reporting high levels of carbon monoxide in the mine.
As of Thursday morning,rescuers had retrieved three bodies and were trying to reach the six people still in theshaft,Xinhua news agency reported.
Initial investigations found illegal operations had resulted in the elevated levels of the poisonous gas.
The mine belongs to Baiyin Nonferrous Metals Group Co Ltd,a major producer of nonferrous metals in China.
