The four-member NDA team which toured three districts of West Bengal — East Midnapore, Nadia and North 24-Paraganas — to look into the electoral ‘‘malpractice’’ in the recent panchayat elections was appaled by the ‘‘impact of political violence let loose by CPI(M) cadre’’.
Samata Party MP B. Desoza said: ‘‘Some of the recent mass rapes have political points’’. She was referring to rape cases in Goksahadanga in Coochbehar district and Aismali in Nadia.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee told the team: “Centre can’t remain aloof when democracy is under attack.’’ She demanded Central intervention, including considering the option of President’s rule, to “free the state from the state-sponsored terrorism”.
