US Republican presidential nominee John McCain wants India to be a member of the expanded G-8 format, says McCain's adviser.

US Republican presidential nominee John McCain wants India to be a member of the expanded G-8 format but feels its claim to a permanent membership of the UN Security Council was difficult due to complicated equations, says McCain’s adviser.

“Senator McCain wants India to be a part of the expanded G-8 format. But he feels that India’s claim to a permanent membership of the UN Security Council was hard to come by because of the complicated equations there,” adviser to John McCain’s presidential campaign Richard R Burt said.

While change is required in the UN structure in lieu of India’s growing influence on world affairs some permanent members don’t want to leave their membership while some non-permanent members, who do not have much influence, want to be part of it, he said.

After their tour to Canada, Germany and other countries, Burt and adviser to Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign Nelson W Cunningham were in the national capital for a debate on ‘The US Presidential Election: Global Impact’ on Wednesday evening.

Terming India as a strategic partner of the United States, Cunningham said that Senator Obama sees India as a strategic partner of the United States.

He had supported the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal, he added.

On the issue of outsourcing of jobs, Cunningham said, “Senator Obama is not against outsourcing but against the policies that encourage it. He understands that Boston will compete against Bangalore and wants to work to keep the United States competitive.”
