The state Crime Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday arrested a hardcore activist of the Laskar-e-Toiba (LeT) from Murshidabad district in West Bengal along with a laptop and gelatine sticks.
Inspector General of Police Siddhinath Gupta said that Mohammed Mustaq had been operating for a long time from Raghunathgunj village in Murshidabad district as a local agent of the terror outfit.
Mustaq, a 46-year-old resident of Gopalnagar locality in Raghnathgunj, gave shelter to terrorists and coordinated between LeT modules of Bangladesh and India.
A cloth merchant by profession, he gave shelter to a person named Sikandar Azam who was arrested from Kashmir a few days back for subversive activities. ‘‘Getting the tip-off from Azam, we tracked down Mustaq and arrested him,’’ Gupta said.
Asked if he had any link with the back-to-back blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, Gupta said, “We have just arrested him and it will be too early to comment on his activities right now. Unless we interrogate him properly, we cannot say if he has any involvement in the blasts.”
CID sources are hopeful that the laptop recovered from Mustaq may contain some vital information.
