Some may say the end justifies the means, but the Indian girls would have been far from satisfied with their show on the court today, despite their win over the Koreans at the World Junior tennis championships.
On Thursday, the Indians clinched the tie before the doubles were played, but the manner in which Rishika Sunkara and Nova Patel sought out their wins left a lot to be desired. In the first match, Sunkara, playing against Sung-ah Park, recovered from her large unforced errors count to eke out a straight sets 6-3,6-3 win.
Nova Patel played the second singles match against Ji-yun Park, and she too laboured over a tie-break in the first set to win 7-6 (4), 6-3 .
The doubles match saw the Indians lose badly — 0-6, 4-6. Nevertheless, they won the tie 2-1 to top Group 4. The quarter finals begin from Friday, with the hosts taking on Uzbekistan. A win will confirm their flight to the Czech Republic for the finals.
