Hurricane Nargis is a cyclonic storm that was formed in the Bay of Bengal and observed on April 24 as one among the abundant disturbances in the warm tropical waters during the pre and post-monsoon seasons.

Though observers had predicted only a poor chance of the disturbance assuming huge proportions, she has intensified to a “very severe cyclonic storm” literally feeding on the warm waters. In the process, she has also cornered the name “Nargis” that was reserved for the next severe intensity cyclone to form in the north Indian Ocean region.

“There is no threat to Tamil Nadu because of this high intensity cyclone storm. The calculation shows it is likely to move in a north-northwesterly direction,” said SR Ramanan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre.

Satellite imagery with the Indian Meteorological Department shows there were intense to very intense clouds in association with the system. Though officials at the Area Cyclone Warning Centre of the Regional Meteorological Centre do not foresee the storm hitting the state’s coastline, the continuous development of the cyclone is being closely watched, as it is lying relatively stationary at about 550 km off the coast of Chennai.
