CHANDIGARH, Nov 19: Hosts Chandigarh and Haryana won the boys and girls hockey titles respectively in the XLIV National School Games which concluded at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here today. Both the winners won virtually without facing any challege from their respective rivals.
In the boys final for under-19 at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium, Chandigarh outplayed and outclassed Uttar Pradesh by half a dozen goals without any reply. Chandigarh scored three goals in each half. Their star performers were inside-right Inderjit Singh and centre-forward Sandeep Singh, who scored a brace each. Inderjit, who helped Chandigarh race to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, completed his brace with another goal in the 59th minute. Sandeep scored in the 27th and 63rd minutes.
Inside-left Lakhwinder (28th) and outside-left Rajpal (41st) were the other scorers for the winners. Madhya Pradesh finished third by beating Punjab.
However, the hosts were routed in the girls final. Haryana recorded a runaway 5-0 verdict with inside-right Kiran Bala contributing two goals (26th and 57th minutes). The winners led 2-0 at half time. Outside-right Meenakshi (14th), centre forward Simarjit Kaur (28th) and centre-half Gurpreet (65th) swelled the Haryana kitty with one goal each.
Punjab girls captured bronze medal by defeating Himachal Pradesh by a solitary goal scored by outside-right Sandeep Kaur.
