Gujarat wants to attract eco-tourists

AHMEDABAD, MARCH 20: The departments of forest, environment and port development in Gujarat are studying at least four projects the Keshubhai Patel government is pushing to help market the state as an attractive eco-tourism destination.

The departments have been asked to submit a feasibility report by March 31 for the projects at the Marine National Park along the Cord Islands of Jamnagar, bird sanctuary, Nal Sarovar and the prestigious Gir Sanctuary known for its unique Asiatic Lions. There is also a plan to develop the Rann of Kutch for tourists.

The projects include a train journey across Gir, cruise-launch along the coastline, ferry service, hovercraft and also connecting Okha-Bet-Dwarka through a tourist launch. These are to be jointly developed by the three departments. The government is also reportedly keen to involve private parties in the venture.

Departmental sources claimed this was one of the first serious projects to attract eco-tourists to Gujarat.
