In the season of fronts formation, NDA convenor and Defence Minister George Fernandes today said there is need to bring in ‘‘socialists to strengthen the NDA’’.

Fernandes’s remark is expected to keep the pot boiling, coming as it does close on the heels of his meeting with Samajwadi Party leader and UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav yesterday.

While JD(U) leader and Food Minister Sharad Yadav looked on, Fernandes went on to add, ‘‘If socialists join the JD(U), they are welcome. Efforts are on to bring back those outside the JD(U) and we are confident that all will be united.’’

With elections round the corner, unification is in and the Fernandes-Nitish Kumar combine has just merged their party with the JD(U). On his meeting with LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan, he said: ‘‘I have talked to Paswan, but time alone will tell whether he will come. You never know who is up to what.’’
