HYDERABAD, DEC 27: Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Arun Jaitley on Sunday preferred correcting minor aberrations in the Constitution through a democratic process but opposed changes in the basic structure.

The much-debated federal structure and presidential form of government could have been conceived by the founding fathers of the Constitution, but they chose the best system of the time and it still holds good going by experience, he pointed out.

Delivering a lecture, “On the threshold of the new millennium: A need for change in the Constitution”, organised by the BJP State unit here, Jaitley however admitted that there was need for a review of the Constitution, judged by the performance of institutions such as the legislature and judiciary. The Constitution is the most liberal document of the world and still remains relevant, he said.

Differing with those favouring the presidential form of government, the minister said the parliamentary system was the best in the world andprovided for an opportunity to every political party and representative of any religious or cultural group to make it to the Lok Sabha, where every member had a right to participate in the decision-making.
