CHANDIGARH, Feb 22: Chandigarh women team would be banking on the experience of some of the players in the forthcoming national women handball championship to be held at Ropar from March 8 to 13. More than 15 probables were recently selected for the fortnight camp, which is being held at DAV Senior Secondary School in Sector 8.
“Experienced players normally don’t wilt under pressure. This would enable us to have a good defence-line. If the team can check the opponents from scoring, half the battle in won,” said Ravinder Singh, handball coach.
The coach, however, is also working on a strategic to build an attacking line. “A good forward line coupled with strong defence is the best weapon to upset the calculation of the strongest side in the fray,” said the coach.
Apart from strategy, the coach has also drawn up a scheduled to keep the players in good physical condition for the big meet. The camper in the morning session would do general exercise and running to maintain their physical fitness while the evening session would be spend on game tactics.
Karamjeet, Mandeep, Narinder, Monica, Narinder and Anu are some of the players who have more than two national under their belts ans are in the camp.
It has been nearly a decade that Chandigarh women’s team got a standing in the medal tally. In 1987 the team got the bronze. After that it has been mere participation.
Why the team has not been able to make the grade, the coach said: “Most of the time, the national meet is held prior to the examination, and due to academic pressure, the players are unable to participate. This is one of the reasons among others that we have not been able to make the last four.”
Since the nationals are being held in the neighbourhood Ropar, which is just one hour drive from the City. Most of the senior players have decided to attend the camp and were seen in action today. “It is good opportunity for us to make the last four stage,” said one of the camper.
Some of the selected probables are: Karamjeet, Mandeep Kaur, Sukhjeet Kaur, Gurpreet, Shivani, Sarika, Narinder, Kulwinder, Monica, Pradeep, Prema, Anu, Pooja, Kanu Priya, Pooja Sharma, Vishvas, Harwinder, Ambica, Preeti.
