Pet sterilisation is a vital decision for any pet owner, with long-term implications for your pet’s health and behaviour.

While the procedure has significant benefits, determining the right age to sterilise is equally crucial. Dr Harsh Veerbhan, founder of WAAT Pet Clinic, explained the advantages of sterilisation and the considerations involved.

Health benefits of sterilisation

For female pets, sterilisation can dramatically reduce the risk of pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection, and eliminates the possibility of ovarian or uterine cancer, Dr Veerbhan said. In male pets, sterilisation prevents testicular cancer and reduces the risk of prostate-related issues, making it a powerful preventive measure for their health.

“Sterilised pets are generally calmer, less likely to roam, and less prone to aggressive behaviours such as fighting,” notes Dr Veerbhan.  These behavioural benefits not only make life easier for pet owners but also contribute to a safer environment for pets.

The right time for sterilisation

While sterilisation offers numerous benefits, performing the procedure at the correct age is key. Early sterilisation, particularly before the adolescent stage, might result in unwanted side effects for certain breeds, such as anxiety, noise phobias, or even impacts on bone development. “The ideal age for sterilisation varies depending on your pet’s size, breed, and overall health,” Dr Veerbhan explains, stressing the importance of consulting with a veterinarian to determine the right timing.

Each pet is unique, and the decision to sterilise should consider factors such as breed-specific risks, lifestyle, and health conditions. A veterinarian’s guidance can ensure that the procedure supports your furry companion’s long, healthy, and happy life.
