When it comes to the world’s priciest aquarium fish, one name swims right to the top. According to Quora users, the Asian Arowana (or Red Arowana Fish) has emerged as the unanimous pick for the most expensive aquarium fish. Here’s all you need to know about this prized creature, followed by a look at a few other costly fish that aquarists and fish enthusiasts dream of owning:

Red Arowana Fish

It costs a person up to USD 400,000 (approximately INR 3,51,29,600) for a single red arowana fish. According to a user, “The red arowana originates in Malaysia and is considered a highly protected species under the Washington Convention. Its lineage is said to predate human history itself. The fish also has an extremely low reproduction rate — about 50 fish may produce only 2–5 offspring, especially among the rare red species. With a lifespan of around 40 years and a reputation for bringing luck and prosperity, it’s no wonder collectors are willing to pay a fortune.”

Another user noted, “Probably the most expensive fish in the USA is the Asian Arowana, Scleropages formosus. The fish are costly to begin with, and they are illegal to possess in the USA. When you start adding in lawyers’ fees, the price of the fish increases quickly! I am not sure if there is any jail time involved, but if you are caught smuggling the fish across the border, there may be!

Polka Dot Stingray

Adding to the favourites’ expensive fish list is also Polka Dot Stingray. A user shared, Google shows the most expensive one can reach up to USD 100,000 (approximately INR 87,82,400) — equal to a decent car! It is beautiful but also dangerous. Poison from the spine of the stingray can cause great harm. Moreover, their status is endangered; thus, exporting from their native Brazil is illegal. Captive breeding is allowed, though.”

As another high-end option for aquarists and collectors, the polka fish is recognised for its distinctive round appearance and white polka dots. At the same time, they may not be as pleasing and pretty as their contemporaries, but their bubbly quirks are what appeal the eye.

So, don’t give a second thought if you are planning to buy one, but make sure you have a large tank for it to swim in, as freshwater stingrays require ample space.

Other expensive fish

Peppermint Angelfish

Costing approximately USD 30,000 (approximately INR 26,34,720) the Peppermint Angelfish is one of the most sought-after saltwater fish in the world. The captivating appearance of this small yet striking fish draws aquarists and fish lovers. And how do you identify it? Through its red and white stripes, which resemble a candy cane.

Found in the waters around the Cook Islands (in the South Pacific), it’s one of the most prized fish you will find in the world. Reason? They are sometimes untraceable because they live in reefs at depths exceeding 100 meters, making them inaccessible to divers.

Golden Basslet

Found in Atlantic reefs, these small, golden-hued fish charm spectators with their summery glow. Due to its deep habitat, it becomes challenging for divers to catch the Golden Basslet, making it a highly sought-after fish among aquarists.

And how much does it cost? Approximately USD 8,000 (INR 7,02,592) whether big or small, their radiance and rarity make them a favourite among divers. For collectors, it’s an expensive and exotic addition to their home aquarium.

Neptune Grouper

Ranging from USD 800 (approximately INR 70,259.20) to USD 6000 (approximately INR 5,26,944) the Neptune Grouper is another expensive saltwater fish. Embracing a mix of orange, pink, and yellow stripes, the fish is native to the deep reefs of the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

And like its other expensive counterparts, Neptune Groupers’ habitat is often unreachable for divers, sometimes living at depths of over 100 meters. Hence, the expensive pricing. Interestingly, those hunted are juveniles, usually found at the surface level of water.
