Toy manufacturer Mattel has issued an apology following an unexpected misprint on the packaging of its new Wicked dolls. The dolls, based on the upcoming Wicked movie starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, feature a singing element and are part of a highly anticipated product line.
Fans quickly noticed an error on the packaging, where a link to an adult website appeared instead of the intended movie website address. Images of the mistake surfaced on social media, with fans sharing their surprise.
“I purchased the Singing Elphaba doll and upon inspection, the website printed on the back side [of the] Mattel box, right above the barcode is listed as… an unaffiliated adult [not safe for work] 18+ website,” one fan wrote on Reddit. Another user confirmed seeing the misprint on shelves at Target and Walmart.
In a statement, Mattel said it “deeply regrets” the incident, apologising for the “unfortunate error” and advising parents that the incorrect website “is not appropriate for children.”
Mattel further advised consumers who have already purchased the dolls to discard or obscure the misprinted website link. Additionally, the company encouraged anyone affected to reach out to Mattel’s customer service for further guidance.
The dolls have mainly been sold in the US. The Wicked movie is set for release in the US and UK on November 22.
