With the spotlight on edible skincare and gut detoxification, ingredients and wellness drinks that offer multiple benefits for skin health have been enjoying their time lately, and Malaika Arora has jumped on the bandwagon. “I start my day with this retinol juice, it’s got carrot, cucumber, orange and lemon,” she told Times Now Foodie during a recent interview. Curious, we turned to experts to understand the health benefits of the ingredients that go into Arora’s go-to morning concoction.

Carrot juice

Dr Yogini Patil, BAMS and nutritionist at LivLong told indianexpress.com that carrot juice is rich in calcium, vitamin A, sodium, potassium, and magnesium, and also contains trace amounts of vitamins B, C, D, E and K. “A calcium is a fussy mineral, it needs a whole lot of other minerals to support its absorption. Carrot juice provides the correct mix of nutrients,” she explained.

She added that it also “helps fight tumours, increases vigour, vitality, appetite, and body weight. It helps improve the functioning of the nervous system, improves skin, hair and nails, and purifies the blood”.

Patil said, “Carrot juice is rich in beta-carotene, vitamins A, B6, K, and C, and minerals like potassium and phosphorus. Beta-carotene and vitamin A are potent antioxidants that help protect cells from damage and lower the risk of cardiovascular complications- reduce cholesterol levels, regulate blood pressure, and lower atherosclerosis. It is also beneficial for complete eye health.”

“Ginger is a natural diuretic that helps in deeply detoxing the body, while cucumber provides hydration. Lemons and oranges are full of vitamin C which helps bring out the glow from within,” she added.

Cucumber juice

According to Dt. Gulnaaz Shaikh, chief dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, cucumber is rich in vitamin C and prevents water retention in the body and reduces swelling. It has a high water content, keeping the body hydrated, and eliminating toxins from the body. It is also rich in fibre, potassium, and magnesium which help in managing blood pressure levels. Cucumbers are also known to help in releasing excess heat in the stomach, which can otherwise cause bad breath.

“While a mindful start to the day is helpful, you don’t have to make it complicated. What matters more is finding what works for your lifestyle and body. If someone feels good following a specific routine and it is sustainable for them, that’s great. For others, a balanced breakfast, proper hydration, and some movement may be just as effective,” shared Shaikh.
