Plants have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries; and one such plant that is used to treat a variety of skin conditions is witch hazel. Considered to be a natural remedy, this ingredient is made from a plant called Hamamelis virginiana.
“Witch hazel is extracted through a process of steam distillation, which produces a concentrated liquid with a strong, woody scent. It has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly for its anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. Commonly used topically to soothe skin irritation, reduce inflammation and tighten pores, some people also use witch hazel oil as a natural remedy for acne, eczema, and other skin conditions,” Dr Mandeep Singh, HOD-Plastic Surgery, Paras Health, Gurugram told indianexpress.com.
He added that many cosmetic companies use witch hazel to make products like facial toners and wipes, acne treatments, shampoos, and even aftershave. It is one of the few plants that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved as an ingredient for over-the-counter medicines.
Read on to discover the benefits of witch hazel for skin care, according to the expert:
*Soothes skin irritation: Witch hazel oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant properties, which make it useful for soothing skin irritations like rashes, insect bites and minor burns.
*Reduces inflammation: The anti-inflammatory properties of witch hazel oil may help reduce redness, swelling and inflammation associated with conditions like acne, eczema and psoriasis.
*Tightens pores: Witch hazel oil has astringent properties that can help tighten pores, which may reduce the appearance of large pores and help prevent acne breakouts.
*Calms sensitive skin: The oil can be particularly helpful for those with sensitive skin as it can help soothe and calm the skin without causing irritation.
*Moisturises and hydrates: It is also a natural moisturiser and it can help hydrate the skin without leaving a greasy residue.
*Fights signs of ageing: The antioxidant properties of witch hazel oil may help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals, which can lead to premature ageing, wrinkles and fine lines.
Possible side effects
Generally considered safe for most people, witch hazel can be used as an at-home treatment. However, Dr Singh said that some people may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions when using witch hazel, especially if it is applied undiluted or in high concentrations. “It can also be drying to the skin, so it is important to use it in moderation and not overuse it. Additionally, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using witch hazel oil, as there is limited research on its safety during these times,” he added.
Concluding, he said, “Individuals searching for a characteristic option in contrast to customary skincare items might view witch hazel as a valuable expansion to their daily practice. Additionally, it is always recommended to perform a patch test before using any new product and to consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns about using witch hazel.”
