Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic dream suffered a crushing blow with the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s dismissal of her appeal for a joint silver medal. The decision brought an abrupt end to a saga that had captivated the nation.

The wrestler’s Instagram post after the verdict, a solitary image of her on the mat, speaks volumes about her despair. The choice of the poignant song Rabba Ve by B Praak further amplifies the depth of her emotional turmoil. One of the song’s lyrics goes like this, Zindagi Siddhi Kar Denda. Sab Kuch Putta Hi Reh Gaya. Meri Baari Te Lagde. Tuh Rabba Sutta Hi Reh Gaya. The lyrics, a plea to God for solace, mirror the athlete’s apparent anguish over the unexpected turn of events.

As the nation stands in solidarity with Vinesh, the road to recovery promises to be arduous. According to Dr Ashima Ranjan, consultant psychiatrist at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Noida, experiencing heartbreak like this can be incredibly challenging, especially when coupled with public attention and personal difficulties.

“The combination of these factors often leads to feelings of intense isolation and overwhelm. Nevertheless, it’s important to recognize that healing is within reach,” she said.

For anyone, who has been in a similar situation to Vinesh’s will know how things might feel out of your control. But it is important to remember you’re here and alive and life goes on. You’re allowed to feel angry and wallow in your despair but when you’re ready to move one, here are some tips from Dr Ranjan to overcoming heartache, restoring confidence, and developing emotional strength in the face of both private pain and public pressure.

Stop overthinking: It is important to recognize when you’re caught in a cycle of repetitive, unproductive thoughts. Implement strategies to interrupt these patterns, such as engaging in a distracting activity, practicing mindfulness, or using cognitive restructuring techniques.

Meditation: Add regular meditation practice into your routine. This can help calm the mind, reduce stress, and increase self-awareness. Start with short sessions and gradually increase duration. Guided meditations focusing on healing, self-compassion can be beneficial

Relaxation exercises: Learn and practice various relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing exercises. These can help reduce physical tension, lower stress levels, and promote a sense of calm and well-being.
