Healthy, radiant skin is a coveted goal, but expensive serums and creams aren’t the only route to achieving it. In fact, some of the most effective skincare practices require nothing more than a shift in your daily routine and a mindful approach to your environment. Recently, Vasudha Rai, a beauty influencer, took to Instagram to share 3 tips that can help you take care of your skin at home without breaking the bank.

1. Add a spiritual practice to your routine

Rai cited research to explain that any kind of mindful practice “helps you age better at a cellular level”. She added that it also helps improve conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Dr Henna Sharma, consultant dermatology, Yatharth Hospital, Noida Extension explained that while there is limited evidence linking spiritual practices such as meditation or mindfulness to skin health, there are indirect associations worth considering.

Stress is known to exacerbate various skin conditions including acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Meditation and mindfulness techniques have been shown to reduce stress levels and promote overall well-being, potentially contributing to improved skin health. Additionally, stress reduction may lead to better sleep quality, which is crucial for skin repair and regeneration,” Dr Sharma said.

2. Stop drinking cold drinks completely

“Drink only warm water and drinks because this helps improve your gut health and your ability to get rid of toxins from the body,” advised Rai.

Agreeing, Dr DM Mahajan, senior consultant, dermatology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals said that removing cold drinks from your diet might have a positive effect on your skin health. “Cold beverages, particularly those high in sugar or artificial sweeteners, can contribute to inflammation in the body. Inflammation can exacerbate skin conditions like acne, eczema, and premature aging. Cold drinks can also dehydrate the body, leading to dry and dull-looking skin.”

Instead, he recommends drinking warm or room-temperature water and herbal teas, as they can help promote hydration and enhance skin elasticity. “Warm beverages are also believed to improve digestion and circulation, which can indirectly benefit skin health,” he added.

3. Only wash your face with cold water

Rai said that splashing cold water to your face helps reduce puffiness and inflammation of the skin. Additionally, according to Ayurveda, eyes are considered to be the seat of pit of fire. “Therefore, it is advisable to wash the face with cold water to preserve the health of our eyes,” she explained.

While Dr. Seema Oberoi Lall, consultant-dermatologist at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, agrees that splashing cold water on your face can offer some benefits, she cautions that they might be temporary. “Cold water can cause a temporary constriction of blood vessels in the skin,” she explains, “which can make pores appear smaller and give your face a tighter look. Similarly, it can help reduce puffiness, especially around the eyes.”

Dr Lall clarified the temporary nature of the effects: “While the initial response is constriction, cold water exposure can actually improve blood circulation afterwards. This increased blood flow can bring oxygen and nutrients to the skin, giving it a temporary healthy glow. A splash of cold water can still be invigorating and make your face feel more awake, especially in the morning.”
