There is no one-size-fits-all routine for skincare and the same goes for makeup. Different skin types require different makeup application techniques as well as products and formulas. Whether it’s oily, dry, or a combination of the two, educating yourself about the right makeup can make all the difference.
“Choosing the right makeup for your skin type can be tricky. As such, here’s an easy guide to select the ideal makeup products and application techniques that will work with your skin type, leaving you with beautiful and healthy-looking skin,” Isha Yogi, Senior Lecturer, Personal Styling & Image Consultancy, PearlxStudio told indianexpress.com.
Here are some tips to choose the right makeup for different skin types, according to the expert:
Oily skin
If you have oily skin, it is advisable to use lightweight, oil-free, and non-comedogenic products, which do not clog the pores. Don’t forget to double-cleanse your face before applying any product.
It’s common to have visible open pores with oily skin. Hence, a pore-blurring primer is a perfect fit for this skin type. Also, opt for a matte finish foundation or a tinted moisturiser with a mattifying effect. Set your foundation with a loose powder or a compact to help your makeup stay intact. Use blotting papers to control excess oil throughout the day.
Dry skin
For dry skin, choose a dewy or satin finish foundation, or a hydrating tinted moisturiser that will moisturise and nourish the skin. Avoid foundations that are labelled matte or powder finish, and stay away from powder-based products as they can accentuate dryness, or use them only in limited quantities. Finish your makeup with a hydrating fixing spray for a dewy finish.
Combination skin
If you have combination skin with oily T-zone and dry cheeks, choose oil-free and lightweight products for the T-zone and hydrating products for the cheeks. Similarly, opt for a matte finish foundation for the T-zone and a hydrating foundation for the cheeks.
Apply a water-based moisturiser before makeup application followed by a mattifying primer to be on the safe side. Set your makeup with a translucent powder as it is lighter, and will not make your makeup look cakey. If your skin looks oily and shiny by the end of the day, opt for less highlighter. If you have dry cheeks, opt for a liquid highlighter. Finish your makeup with a matte setting spray.
Sensitive skin
If you have sensitive skin, look for labels such as fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and non-irritating and anti-inflammatory in your products. Opt for mineral based makeup as these formulations usually don’t contain harsh chemicals or irritants such as dyes and additives.
Use natural cleansing balms to remove your makeup instead of wipes to avoid any skin irritation. Avoid too many actives in your skincare.
Acne-prone skin
If you have acne-prone skin, use non-comedogenic products that won’t clog your pores and avoid aggravating your acne further. If you have flaky skin around your non-active acne areas, use a cleanser accompanied with a mild and gentle scrub or exfoliator. Use a lightweight foundation or a tinted moisturiser with acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.
Another fail-safe for acne prone skin is mineral based makeup. Avoid heavy, oil-based products that can clog pores.
Use a colour corrector to conceal any marks or dark spots. Never ever sleep with your makeup on and use a gentle makeup remover before going to bed to avoid clogged pores and breakouts. Make sure to clean your makeup brushes on a regular basis to avoid any bacterial build up that can further worsen your acne.
