In an intimate home tour with Mashable India, Sunita Ahuja, wife of Bollywood icon Govinda, opened the doors to their Mumbai residence — a space that holds their family’s most treasured memories. The apartment, ingeniously combining three flats, stands as a testament to their journey together.
“Yeh ghar mein meri shaadi hui thi. Yeh second ghar tha jo Govinda ne liya tha aur hamari shaadi is mandir mein hui aur mere do sundar-sundar bachche is ghar mein paida hue the aur bade bhi is ghar mein hue,” shares Sunita, her voice filled with emotion as she explains how this home witnessed her wedding and the birth of her children.
The home’s interior, designed by the couple’s children Tina and Yash, strikes a delicate balance between elegance and comfort. Sunita takes particular pride in their decor choice: “Humko na zyada hodge-podge pasand nahi hai ghar mein. Humne bahut soch samajh ke, yeh ekdum English style ka Tina ne simple sa rakha hua hai, taaki ghar ghar jaise lagna chahiye, showpiece ki tarah nahi hona chahiye.”
A special corner of the house is dedicated to their son’s entertainment area, complete with a TV and PlayStation. “Yeh corner jo hai, yeh mere bete ka corner hai jahan usne apne liye TV lagwaya hai aur uska play station yahaan hai,” Sunita explains. The family often gathers here for movie nights, with Sunita admitting her current fascination with South Indian star Allu Arjun.
One of the most strictly maintained traditions in their home is the no-shoes policy. “Mere ghar mein jute pehen ke aana allowed nahi hai. Main jo bhi guest aaye bade se bade, chhote se chhote, main bolti hoon aap shoes bahar khol ke aaiye, kyunki meri mother-in-law ko pasand nahi tha,” Sunita firmly states, honouring her mother-in-law’s preferences.
The house features multiple areas designed for gatherings and celebrations. A sophisticated bar area, crafted by Yash, stands as a testament to their hospitality. “Yeh bar banaya Yash ne, bade shauq se banaya. Jab humare yahaan friends aate hain toh jisko jo peena hai, jo uthana hai, uthao aur piyo apna ghar samajh ke,” Sunita explains, emphasising how they want guests to feel at home.
Spirituality forms the cornerstone of their home life. A special balcony houses their Tulsi plant, which both Tina and Sunita maintain. “Yeh balcony humne sirf tulsi maa ke liye banaya hai,” she explains, adding that they light a mustard oil lamp every evening for protection against the evil eye.
Every house owned by the family, whether in Darjeeling or Kolkata, features a Sai Baba idol. “Mere har ghar mein aap Sai Baba ko dekhoge udhar. Kyunki main bahut Baba ko maanti hoon,” Sunita shares, highlighting her deep devotion.
The entire house follows Vastu Shastra principles meticulously. “Poora ghar hi maine vastu ke hisaab se banaya hai,” Sunita explains. The seven-month renovation included careful consideration of every detail, from mirror placements to the selection of Italian furniture. The hall is long and a great space for parties. Sunita mentioned that it can fit 25-30 people comfortably.
“Ek bhi corner aisa nahi banaya ki apne mann se kar liya, ya kuch bhi kar liya. Ek-ek corner mein vastu ke hisaab se banaya,” she emphasises, noting how every corner was designed according to Vastu principles.
She mentioned how the space is perfect for people to dance and enjoy, joking that she can dance, but her husband Govinda might struggle after accidentally shooting himself recently. “Main toh karti hoon, Baba Govinda ka, pata nahi, jab se goli laga hai. Nahi usne bhi kiya tha Netflix pe maine dekha tha. Woh achanak se uske haath se revolver girr gaya aur main toh yaha thi bhi nahi.”
Looking ahead, the family is planning to upgrade to a larger space. “Ab hum log decide kar rahe hain ki thoda bada ghar lena hai humein kyunki bachche bade ho rahe hain, phir Yash bhi thoda settle ho jaayega toh usko apna ghar chahiye,” Sunita reveals, sharing their plans for expansion either this year or the next.
The tour ends with Sunita’s gracious invitation for feedback: “Agar ismein kisi ko bhi vastu ke bhai sahab ya behan ji dekh rahe hain, aap chahte ho main kuch changes karoon apne aur mere bachon ke benefit ke liye toh please batayein.”
