Samantha Ruth Prabhu, a notable presence in the film industry, has been transparently sharing her path to recovery from the autoimmune condition Myositis, which she was diagnosed with in 2022. Embracing a comprehensive approach to wellness, Samantha has integrated alternative treatments into her routine, such as far infrared sauna therapy.

Posting pictures of herself indulging in an infrared sauna bath, Samantha shared the various benefits from this specific therapy that resonate with the health hurdles she has faced because of Myositis.

Infrared saunas have become a popular wellness trend, but what exactly are the benefits, and should you try them? Dr Smriti Naswa Singh, Consultant Dermatologist & Cosmetic Dermatologist at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, explained that, unlike traditional saunas that heat the air, infrared saunas use lamps to emit infrared light that directly penetrates the skin, generating warmth. This translates to a lower temperature range (110°F – 135°F) compared to conventional saunas (150°F – 195°F).

What are its potential health benefits?

The heat therapy in infrared saunas induces sweating, mimicking the effects of moderate exercise on your cardiovascular system, she said. Studies suggest benefits like improved blood flow, decreased muscle and joint pain, and detoxification through sweat.

Dr Shraddha Deshpande, Aesthetic, Plastic & Reconstructive surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, said that despite these claims, scientific evidence validating its efficacy remains inconclusive. “However, given its non-invasive nature, individuals may consider exploring this therapy with minimal risk.”

Sweating can indeed leave your skin feeling refreshed, but Dr. Singh emphasised that infrared saunas aren’t a magic solution for healthy skin. A holistic approach that incorporates a balanced diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, and managing stress is key.

Important safety considerations

While generally safe, infrared saunas do come with some potential risks. Excessive heat can lead to dehydration, dizziness, fainting, and electrolyte imbalance.

Certain groups, including pregnant women, people with multiple sclerosis, lupus, rosacea, or photosensitivity, should avoid infrared saunas due to potential complications. Dr Singh recommended consulting a physician before using an infrared sauna, especially to assess heart health.

Hydration is key

To minimise risks, proper hydration is crucial. Dr Singh suggested consuming electrolyte-rich fluids like oral rehydration solutions (ORS), coconut water, and fresh lime juice before, during, and after a sauna session.

Infrared saunas may offer some health and wellness benefits, but it’s important to manage expectations and prioritise a balanced lifestyle for optimal skin health. Always consult your doctor before using an infrared sauna, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.
