King Charles III, the reigning monarch of Britian, remembered his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on Sunday as he marked the first Mother’s Day in the UK since her death. To commemorate the occasion, the official social media handles of the Royal Family posted a photo showing Charles as a baby sitting on the Queen’s lap.
“To all mothers everywhere, and to those who may be missing their mums today, we are thinking of you and wishing you a special day,” the caption read.
The post also features an old image of Queen Consort Camilla standing behind her mother, Rosalind Shand, who died in 1994.
Queen Elizabeth, Britain’s longest reigning monarch, passed away on September 8 at her Balmoral Castle aged 96. Upon her death, King Charles ascended to the throne and was formally proclaimed as the United Kingdom’s new monarch on September 10. On May 6, the King and Queen Consort will officially be crowned at Westminster Abbey with nationwide celebrations.
Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Prince and Princess of Wales, also marked the UK Mother’s Day with two pictures of their family. In the first picture, Kate can be seen sitting on a tree with her three children — Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4. The second picture in the post shows the princess holding her youngest son Prince Louis in her arms.
“Happy Mother’s Day from our family to yours,” the caption read. Both the pictures were taken by photographer Matt Porteous at the family’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom is a special day celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This day is dedicated to showing appreciation and love to all the wonderful mothers and mother figures in our lives. It is a time to honour the sacrifices they have made and the hard work they have put in to raise their children. The history of Mother’s Day in the UK dates back to the 16th century when it was known as Mothering Sunday. It was a religious holiday that took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent, and people would visit their ‘mother church’ where they were baptized. Over time, the tradition evolved, and it became a day for children to visit their mothers and present them with small gifts and flowers.
