Ahead of Trooping the Colours parade, Queen Camilla has been appointed to a new royal role of the highest order of chivalry in Scotland by King Charles. Buckingham Palace on Friday announced that King Charles appointed Queen Camilla as the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, the highest order of chivalry in Scotland.

“The King has been graciously pleased to appoint The Queen to the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle,” read the Buckingham Palace statement. It added that Queen Camilla’s appointment is effective immediately. Camilla has previously served as Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen since 2013 and visited the college in January.

Queen Camilla has also been the Patron of Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres and visited the hubs across Scotland. She has also acted as patron or president for national charities like Crathie Opportunity Holidays, Scotland’s Gardens Scheme and Horseback UK.

The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle honours 16 Knights and Ladies for their contribution to national life. “The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle represents the highest honour in Scotland. Revived by King James VII, the Order has a complement of 16 Knights (KT),” read the statement.

Apart from Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and Prince William are also members of the highest order of chivalry in Scotland. The members of the prestigious order wear traditional dark green robes and black velvet hats with white ostrich feathers for ceremonial duties.

The appointment of the queen consort to the Order of the Thistle comes on the eve of Trooping the Colour, the first birthday parade held for King Charles in London.

In June 2022 Queen Elizabeth had formally invested Camilla into the Order of the Garter, the oldest order of chivalry in the U.K. The then monarch had also expressed her wish that Camilla be recognised as ‘Queen Consort’ when Charles acceded the throne.

Apart from Camilla, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, also received a new title from King Charles. She was invested as a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St John, formalising a promotion from Queen Elizabeth last year.
