According to a recent Mumbai court judgment, pets are “part and parcel of a decent lifestyle” and they “fulfill the emotional deficit” in our lives.

The magistrate court made these observations regarding a plea made by a 55-year-old woman, who sought maintenance from her estranged husband citing her age, health issues, and three Rottweiler dogs dependent on her.

We talked to experts to understand how pets can contribute to leading a healthy lifestyle.

Dr Rohan Kumar, consultant psychiatrist, Regency Hospital Ltd, said pets contribute to our physical health by engaging us in daily activities such as walking, playing, and exercising. “Studies have shown that dog owners tend to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels compared to non-pet owners, primarily due to the increased physical activity associated with pet care,” he said.

He added that interacting with pets has been shown to release endorphins, which are natural feel-good hormones that promote relaxation and reduce stress levels. “Simply stroking or cuddling a pet can help lower blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels (a stress hormone),” Kumar added.

According to Mitu Paul from Drools, a pet food brand, well-established organisations like the American Cancer Society, MentalHelp.Net, and Paws for Comfort “have conducted studies consistently demonstrating the positive effects of pet ownership on an individual’s mental well-being”.

While individuals are placing increased emphasis on their health, having a pet as a companion offers significant benefits for both physical and mental well-being, according to Paul.

Pets can indeed help fill an emotional deficit in your life and contribute to managing your mental health, said Kumar. Here’s how they can be helpful.

Unconditional love and companionship

Pets, whether they are cats, dogs, or other animals, offer unconditional love and companionship.

“This unconditional love and companionship can help combat feelings of loneliness, especially for individuals who may not have a strong support system or live alone,” said Kumar.

Stress reduction and relaxation

Interacting with pets has a calming effect on the human body. “When you pet or cuddle with your pet, it can help release oxytocin, often referred to as the “cuddle hormone.” Oxytocin promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and enhances overall well-being,” said Kumar.

Routine and purpose

Taking care of a pet requires establishing routines and responsibilities, which can be beneficial for managing mental health.

Having a daily routine centered around your pet provides structure and a sense of purpose, said Kumar. He added that this can be especially helpful for individuals struggling with depression, as it can give them a reason to get out of bed, engage in daily activities, and feel a sense of accomplishment.

Social connection and support

Paul said that pets act as social catalysts, facilitating connections with others and fostering a sense of community.

“Additionally, they encourage physical activity, leading to better overall health and potentially enhanced mental resilience,” she added.

Taking care of your pets is crucial to ensure their well-being and show your gratitude for their companionship. You must ensure you’re providing them proper nutrition and mental, physical stimulation, Kumar said.

Emotional connection and bonding are of utmost importance, explained Paul. “We emphasise the significance of spending quality time with pets, engaging in grooming, cuddling, and positive reinforcement training techniques. These actions foster a nurturing environment where pets feel secure, valued, and loved as cherished members of the family,” she said.

Additionally, ensure you’re grooming them and taking them for regular veterinary check-ups.

Remember, each pet is unique, and their care requirements may vary. Experts elucidate that it’s important to understand and cater to your specific pet’s needs, seek professional advice when necessary, and provide them with a safe and nurturing environment.
