If you’re in the habit of reaching for your phone as soon as you wake up, it’s time to make a change. You’re not alone in this behaviour; even actor Huma Qureshi used to do it. However, she has since abandoned that practice, and you can too. You’ve come to the right place because we’re going to help you transform your life by setting up the right morning routine.
According to Kushneet Sachdev, Counselling Psychologist at Lissun, a mental health and emotional wellness startup, having a set morning routine can help you feel more organised and in control of your day.
“It can also help you reduce stress and anxiety by providing structure and predictability. By starting your day with a routine, you can set a positive tone for the rest of the day,” she said.
Offering tips for building a good morning routine, Sachdev suggested starting with setting a consistent wake-up time. You can then move on to planning out the activities you want to include in your routine, such as exercise, meditation, or journaling.
She advised making sure to leave enough time for breakfast and prepare it the night before to save time in the morning. “Keep the routine simple and flexible so you can adjust it as needed,” she added.
Here are five morning habits that can bring a good change in your life and help transform it, according to Sachdev.
Gratitude practice
Starting your day with gratitude can help you feel more positive and appreciative of the good things in your life, Sachdev said. “It can also help you focus on the present moment and reduce stress,” she added.
Exercise
According to Sachdev, exercising in the mornings can help you boost your mood, energy levels, and overall health. She explained that it can also help you feel more productive and focused throughout the day.
Mindfulness meditation
Practising mindfulness in the morning can help you reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and improve your overall mental health, Sachdev advised. “It can also help you stay focused and present throughout the day,” she added.
Planning and goal-setting
Planning your days in the morning and setting goals can help you prioritise your tasks and make progress towards your long-term goals. “Taking a few minutes in the morning to plan out your day and set goals can help you feel more organised and focused,” Sachdev added.
Reading or learning
Starting your day with reading or learning something new can help you expand your knowledge and skills. “It can also help you stay motivated and inspired throughout the day,” said Sachdev.
