Hair can make or break one’s look, whether you flaunt long, luscious tresses or sport a chic bob. So, it goes without saying that haircare forms an integral part of many beauty routines. It is the same for Mira Kapoor.
In a conversation with The Word Magazine, the beauty brand founder opened up about her hesitation to get her hair cut drastically short, fearing that it wouldn’t grow back to its original length. “If I had the courage to do it, I’d chop my hair super short — into a lob. I just don’t have the guts to do it because I’m scared it’ll never grow back. Also, I worry about what will happen to it in the humidity..I’ll end up having hair like Monica (from F.R.I.E.N.D.S) did!” she added.
Mira Kapoor isn’t the only one worried about losing the length of her hair; several other women seem to echo her sentiments. But is this just a myth, or is there actual merit to this fear? Curious, we asked an expert.
“Even if you get a drastic haircut, your hair will typically grow back to its original length unless it was unevenly cut beforehand. A haircut alone will not affect the length of future hair growth,” said Dr Rema Devi T J, Consultant-Dermatology & Cosmetology, KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum.
However, she pointed out that underlying nutritional deficiencies, such as protein, iron, vitamin D, and minerals, can lead to hair loss. While hair may regrow after a haircut, these nutritional deficiencies can result in persistent hair loss, reduced volume, and uneven growth.
According to Dr Yogesh Kalyanpad, Dermatologist, Mumbai, Member of DocTube, a haircut can be a beneficial step in treating hair damage. “The primary reason is that it removes split ends, which are the damaged ends of your hair that can cause further breakage and dryness. By cutting away these damaged ends, you’re essentially preventing the damage from travelling further up the hair shaft,” he said.
To promote healthy hair, Dr Devi suggested keeping the scalp clean by washing it daily with an anti-dandruff shampoo if you have dandruff, taking one multivitamin amino acid tablet daily after meals, and applying a peptide serum an hour before bedtime, as prescribed by a doctor. “It’s also important to rule out other medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism, that may interfere with hair growth. Addressing these underlying issues by getting medical tests done on time is crucial for optimal hair health,” she added.
