Former Bollywood actor Mamta Kulkarni has renounced worldly life to assume the title of “Mahamandleshwar” of the Kinnar Akhara at the ongoing Mahakumbh 2025 in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj. Acharya Mahamandleshwar of Kinnar Akhara, Laxmi Narayan, a spiritual leader, told ANI that Kulkarni has been given the spiritual name “Yamai Mamta Nandgiri”.

“Kinnar Akhara is going to make Mamta Kulkarni a Mahamandleshwar. She has been named Shri Yamai Mamta Nandgiri. As I speak, all the rituals are underway,” said Narayan.

He also said, “She has been in touch with Kinnar Akhara and me for the last one and a half years… She is allowed to perform the character of any devotional figure if she wishes, as we do not prohibit anyone from performing their art.”

Talking to the media, Kulkarni said, “This was the order of Mahadev, Maha Kaali. This was the order of my guru. They chose this day. I didn’t do anything.” Kulkarni, dressed in saffron and wearing a rudraksha mala, was photographed performing the traditional ‘Pind Daan’ ritual at Prayagraj’s Sangam Ghat.

To understand the significance of this transformation and the meaning of the title Mahamandleshwar, we reached out to astrologer Dr Virender Sahni.

The term Mahamandleshwar is a revered designation in Hinduism, particularly within Sanatan Dharma. “It is a title conferred within the 13 recognised akharas (monastic orders) of India. These akharas are significant spiritual institutions that safeguard Hindu traditions, philosophy, and monastic disciplines. While the highest position in these orders is that of a Shankaracharya, the title of Mahamandleshwar is also highly esteemed, sitting just below that of a Shankaracharya,” said Sahni.

To become a Mahamandleshwar, one must first be affiliated with a recognised akhara and adhere to its specific rules. “However, the core eligibility lies in taking sannyas (renunciation). This process involves a symbolic act of rebirth, where the aspirant performs their own pind daan — a ritual usually performed for deceased ancestors — signifying the end of their worldly ties, including familial obligations and their previous identity. Post this, their age is reset, and it begins anew from the moment of initiation into sannyas,” said Sahni.

Pattabhishek is an important ceremony following the renunciation. “This ritual involves the Mahamandleshwar-to-be being anointed with the Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, ghee, honey, curd, and sugar), signifying purification and their elevation within the spiritual hierarchy. This grand event is attended by sadhus from all 13 akharas, where they formally present the candidate with the pattu (a symbolic garment or sash), marking their official recognition as Mahamandleshwar,” said Sahni.

While the title does not demand formal academic qualifications, Sahni explained that the knowledge of the Vedas and a connection to a matha (spiritual seat) are deemed essential.

“Additionally, social contributions and an active presence in societal welfare also play a significant role. In a modern context, the Mahamandleshwar acts as a bridge between spiritual orders and society, often liaising between the government and the public,” said Sahni.

Once initiated, a Mahamandleshwar is expected to “walk the path of spirituality, leaving behind their past identity, including their family name, and dedicating their life to serving humanity,” according to Sahni. “This role not only elevates them within the monastic order but also places their words and actions under greater scrutiny and significance. It’s a title that carries immense spiritual, social, and cultural weight,” Sahni said.
