You may diligently oil your hair, wash it using a sulfate-free shampoo, apply a conditioner, air dry it, and probably even wear a serum. But hair care doesn’t stop there. What you eat and snack on every day — in short, nutrition — also plays a huge role, said nutritionist Kiran Kukreja.

As such, she suggested adding a mix of organic honey with nutrient-rich pumpkin seeds, roasted sesame seeds, and sunflower seeds to your diet to supplement your haircare routine. “This promotes healthy, shiny hair,” she said.

So, we reached out to experts to understand more.

Dr Inderpreet Kaur Mahendra, consultant dermatologist, Apollo Clinic Viman Nagar said sesame seeds are oil-rich and provide a good source of healthy fats, protein, B vitamins, minerals, fibre, antioxidants, and other beneficial plant compounds. “Its rich omega fatty acid content nourishes the roots and triggers hair growth. Sesamin, a bioactive substance in sesame seeds, helps in preventing hair loss and greying,” said Dr Inderpreet.

It also helps moisturise the scalp and improves blood circulation, rejuvenating the hair follicles. “Sesame seeds also contain anti-ageing properties that can nourish the hair and potentially avoid or slow down greying,” said Dr Inderpreet.

Pumpkin seed oil is rich in nutrients like zinc, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for healthy hair. According to Dr Inderpreet, these seeds also contain linoleic acid, which has strong anti-inflammatory properties. “Zinc helps to keep the scalp healthy and promotes hair growth, while magnesium strengthens the hair shaft and prevents breakage. Omega-3 fatty acids help to nourish the scalp and hair follicles, keeping them healthy and promoting hair growth,” said Dr Inderpreet.

Sunflower seeds are a rich source of gamma-linolenic acid, a potent nutrient that can help deep condition hair strands, making them more soft, shiny, and luscious. “Additionally, it can stimulate dormant hair follicles and encourage them to produce new hair growth,” said Dr Inderpreet.

Dr Jatin Mittal, co-founder, cosmetologist, and skin expert, Abhivrit Aesthetics, New Delhi said honey-dipped roasted sesame seeds, pumpkin, and sunflower seeds have all the nutritional values that promote healthy hair. “When combined, these ingredients can provide a synergistic effect,” said Dr Mittal.
