Markets in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir valley lack the usual hustle-bustle ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr with many traders staring at losses due to sluggish sales during the festival, news agency PTI reported.
Local traders attributed the lack of enthusiasm among shoppers to the rising trend of online purchase as well as consumers' concerns over increasing prices, the report stated.
Traders said the usual hustle and bustle associated with Eid shopping is missing this time and the overall sales have declined by around 70 per cent. "The market is about 70 per cent down from what it used to be before Eid festivals," vice president of the Lal Chowk Traders Association Suhail Shah told PTI.
He said the market outlook on Eid was "worse than normal days".
The markets, especially the shops dealing with bakeries, confectioneries, ready-made garments and crockery, which used to witness a heavy rush of customers before Eid, are experiencing sluggish sales, he added.
"Every sector is affected. The sales were sluggish even in bakeries and confectionaries this year. Ready-made garment dealers are the most affected. "To some extent, online shopping is to blame for that, but overall, the purchasing power of the people has decreased," Shah said.
Earlier, long queues of people were seen in front of popular bakery shops in the city but those shops are also witnessing a dip in sales, traders said. "The sales are down from last year. There is no sign of the usual shopping zeal associated with Eid," a bakery shop owner in Lal Chowk area said.
Shah said while there is an economic distress, the market seems to run only because of the salaried class.
"It is the money of the salaried class that is moving around. Otherwise, there is an economic distress and the businesses are suffering," he said. (PTI)
Here are some of the traditions and customs associated with Eid-ul-Fitr around the world:
In Indonesia, many people embark on an exodus to their hometowns to celebrate the holiday with loved ones in a homecoming tradition known locally as “mudik.” Before the holiday, popular markets are filled with people buying clothes, shoes, cookies and sweets.
In Malaysia, Muslims also have a homecoming tradition for Eid. The first day usually begins with a morning prayer in the mosque, seeking forgiveness from family and friends, and visiting loved ones’ graves. There’s an “open house” spirit that sees friends and families trading visits to celebrate Eid and enjoy traditional delicacies such as ketupat, rice cooked in a palm leaf pouch, and rendang, a meat dish stewed in spices and braised in coconut milk. Older Muslims give money in green packets to children and guests who visit their homes.
In Egypt, families partake in Eid prayers amid a festive atmosphere. Many visit relatives, friends or neighbors and some travel to vacation spots. Children, usually wearing new Eid outfits, receive traditional cash gifts known as “eidiya.” Making or buying Eid cookies dusted with powdered sugar is another fixture of marking the holiday in the country.
In the United States, where Muslims make up an ethnically and racially diverse minority, many come together for Eid prayers and for festivals featuring fun activities for children and families. These often include such things as face painting and balloon twisting. (AP)
In the Middle East, Syrians will celebrate their first Eid al-Fitr since the end of more than half a century of the Assad family’s rule.
The country's first Ramadan since the ouster of Bashar Assad, who was the president, saw many Syrians relieved, but has also witnessed a worrisome bout of violence amid a chaotic transition.
While in Gaza, this will be the second Eid al-Fitr to fall during the Israel-Hamas war. Israel ended its ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza by launching a surprise wave of strikes killing hundreds of people.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the strikes after Hamas refused Israeli demands to free half of the remaining hostages as a precondition for extending the ceasefire. (AP)
Muslims across the world celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, the festival that marks the completion of the month of Ramadan (fasting).
This may fall on different days across the world, depending on the sighting of the moon. People congratulate each other on the occasion, visit the mosque, and participate in morning congregational prayers with others, and savour traditional sweets like sewaiyaan (vermicelli dessert).
The festival is marked with festivities that usually include family visits, gatherings, outings and new clothes.
Eid-ul-Fitr is observed on the first three days of Shawwal, which is the 10th month of the Hijri or the Islamic lunar calendar, and has its date based on the crescent moon sighting.
The Middle East and the Western countries are likely to observe Eid on March 30, 2025 (Sunday) if the moon is sighted on Saturday.
Notably, South Asian countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh usually celebrate Eid a day later than the Middle East and Western countries.
Consequently, India and its neighbouring countries are expected to observe the festival on Monday, March 31, given that the crescent moon is sighted on Saturday, March 30, and if the moon is seen on March 31, then Eid will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 1.
