Down in Jungleland: A thorn in your flesh

To protect themselves against their enemies, plants have developed a few tricks of their own.

Thorns, spines and prickles have their uses too — and have been used by villagers and householders the world over to protect their land and property from both beasts and humans. (Source: Ranjit Lal)

If a large, lumbering beast wanders up to you, eyes you balefully, and opens its mouth to take a chunk out of you, and you can’t run or hide or charge it, what would you do? You’d arm yourself to the teeth with spears, curved daggers, shark teeth, hypodermics as fine as hair and fully loaded with venom, and whisper, “Come on darling, give us a bite!” So yes, if you’re a plant, you have no choice but to stand and fight. And if you’re a large, lumbering herbivore, you would have to develop a mouth and tongue made of leather, which, actually, the giraffes are doing quite nicely.
