Diwali, the festival of lights, is a time of joy and celebration. However, it’s also a time when pollution levels rise due to firecrackers and excessive waste generation. This year, consider embracing an eco-friendly and affordable approach to celebrate Diwali.
We explore some DIY hacks that not only help you save money but also reduce your environmental footprint. Let’s make this festival both green and budget-friendly.
Devika Khosla, creative director at The Works Interiors, recommends going for water diyas this year.
All it takes is a glass of water on which one can put 2 to 3 spoons of mustard oil. After that, cut a small piece of aluminium foil, which can be pierced from the centre to make way for the cotton wick. Once this is floating, you can light it and decorate the water’s surface with flowers of your choice.
These days, expensive imported flowers are trending in markets. Instead, Khosla suggests going for locally sourced or paper flowers that are cost-effective and sustainable as they can be reused.
“For Rangoli designs, one can prefer using natural materials like coloured rice, flower petals, or spices. Use biodegradable banana leaves as the backdrop, jute as table runners or wall hangings, and glass as lantern or candle holders,” she added.
Here are some other eco-friendly hacks you can adopt.
