Under-eye bags can be a frustrating and often stubborn skin concern. Despite commonly believed, they’re not always caused by lack of sleep — genetics, age, and even allergies can contribute to their appearance. While the most effective solution may be to address the underlying cause, one can employ a range of remedies to minimise their appearance and look fresh.

Sharing one such simple home remedy to get rid of eye bags is actor-vlogger Debina Bonnerjee who said that one can do “cold spoon therapy to reduce eye bags“. In a video shared on Instagram, she takes a cold spoon and gently dabs it on her eyes and the areas surrounding it. Take a look.

But is it effective?

Dr Navya Handa, Dermatologist, Cosmetologist and Laser surgeon, Primus Super Speciality Hospital explains that cold spoon treatment is a natural solution for minimising the look of undereye bags and puffiness. “The coldness of the spoons might constrict the blood vessels around the eyes, decreasing irritation and swelling. Furthermore, the pressure from the spoon might aid with lymphatic drainage, which helps minimise puffiness,” she said, adding that the benefits, however, are often limited and transitory.

Agreeing, Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics said that you can definitely use cold spoon therapy to de-puff your eyes. “A cold spoon will help relax the blood vessels surrounding the eyes by tackling puffiness. You will surely be able to amplify your beauty and get the desired appearance,” she said.

But, how to do it?

To perform cold spoon therapy for eye bags, follow these steps:

*Place two spoons in the refrigerator or freezer for at least 10-15 minutes, until they become cold.
*Lie down and place the cold spoons over your closed eyes, with the curved side of the spoons resting on your eye bags.
*Hold the spoons in place for a few minutes, or until the spoons become warm.
*Remove the spoons from your eyes and repeat the process as needed.

“It’s important to avoid pressing the spoons too hard against your eyes or leaving them on for too long, as this can cause discomfort or even damage to the delicate skin around the eyes. Additionally, if you have any eye conditions or allergies, it’s best to check with your doctor before trying cold spoon therapy or any other remedies for eye bags,” Dr Handa said.

This, however, isn’t the only way to get rid of those pesky eye bags. Dr Kapoor suggested, “If you wish to get rid of those annoying eye bags then cut down on smoking and alcohol, try to sleep on time, and get at least a minimum of 8 hours of sleep on a daily basis. It is better to cut down on fluid intake before hitting the sack and also avoid eating sodium-rich foods. Use cucumbers as a cold compress to de-puff the eyes. Moreover, you need to elevate the head while sleeping. Doing so can allow you to drain excess fluid buildup under the eyes and you will be able to get rid of those notorious eye bags.”

Adding, Dr Handa listed the following additional dos and don’ts:

*Avoid alcohol, salty foods, and caffeine, which can cause dehydration and exacerbate puffiness.
*Use a good-quality eye cream or serum that contains caffeine, vitamin C, or retinol.
*Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
*Gently massage the area around your eyes with your fingertips to improve lymphatic drainage.
