Chaitra Navratri holds immense religious significance in Hindu religion. It falls in the month of Chaitra according to the Hindu calendar which corresponds to March or April as per the Gregorian calendar.

One of the most popular and widely celebrated festivals in India, the word ‘Navratri’ translates to ‘nine nights’ in Sanskrit. Dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her nine avatars, different types of religious programs are organised across the nation.

Date and Timings

This year, Chaitra Navratri will be observed from March 22 to March 31. The Ashtami, which is considered to be the most significant day of the festival, will fall on the eighth day of Navratri, which is on March 30. Ram Navami, the birthday of Lord Rama will be observed on the ninth day of the festival.

According to drikpanchang.com, the Ghatasthapana Muhurta is on March 22 from 6:29 am to 7:42 am.

Puja Samagri and Vidhi

The essentials for the puja are:

*Clay pot
*Clean soil
*Seeds of seven different grains
*A clay/brass pitcher
*Gangajal
*Sacred thread
*Betel nuts
*Some coins
*Five leaves of Ashoka or mango tree
*Raw rice
*Unpeeled coconut
*Flowers
*Durva grass
*Red cloth
*Lid to cover clay pot

Grains are sown in the clay pot and rest of the ingredients are added to it. The sacred thread is tied around the neck of the pot, and after wrapping the red cloth around the coconut, the thread is used to fasten the wrap. The coconut is then placed at the center of the pot.

After this, the Panchopachara puja is done to invoke the goddess, which begins with the lamp offering and later incense sticks are offered to the kalash, followed by flowers.

While Chaitra Navratri is celebrated in northern India, Gudi Padwa is observed in the western part. In Andhra Pradesh, it starts with Ugadi. During this period, people observe a fast and garlic and onions are not eaten by many.
