Carrying power banks in checked-in baggage is prohibited by airlines. While we must adhere to the rules as passengers, have you ever wondered the reason behind this regulation?
“The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has prohibited power banks in checked baggage as they are batteries that utilise lithium cells which tend to combust. The lithium-ion batteries can overheat and catch fire if mishandled or damaged, which can mostly happen during baggage handling,” said Dhairyashil Vandekar, an aviation expert and analyst.
Hence, they are permitted to be carried only in hand baggage or carry-on baggage with the passenger within certain limits, said Dr Vandekar.
Flight crews can respond more effectively to a potential fire in the cabin than in the cargo hold where checked luggage is stored; therefore, these items should be kept in carry-on luggage only, said Colonel Rajgopalan, founder, Aviation Training India.
Airlines allow power banks with up to 100Wh in hand baggage up to max two, while those with a capacity between 100Wh and 160Wh require airline approval before being brought on board. “Power banks exceeding 160Wh are usually prohibited,” said Vandekar.
Passengers must keep their power bank in their hand baggage, ensuring they are within the capacity limits and regulations of the airline. “If in doubt, the passenger should declare their power bank at the check-in counter to be suitably informed and guided by the airline staff for their carriage,” said Vandekar.
Passengers must always check beforehand with the concerned airline for their updated regulations to avoid any last-minute inconvenience.
“Being informed and prepared will make a hassle-free and safe travel for the passengers,” said Vandekar.
