The fasting of Karwa Chauth is strict and observed without taking any food or even a drop of water after sunrise till the sighting of the moon in the night,” Drik Panchang elaborates.

Also known as Karak Chaturthi, ‘Karwa’ or ‘Karak’ refers to the clay pot used to make water offerings to the moon, known as ‘Argha’, which is then given as Dan to a Brahmin or other eligible woman.

The moon has been sighted in Delhi NCR, Chandigarh, and several other cities across North India, signalling the end of the Karwa Chauth fast.

Women who were observing the fast are now proceeding with traditional rituals — offering water to the moon, praying for their spouses’ well-being, and breaking their fasts.

Karwa Chauth 2025: Puja Vidhi and Mantra

(Express Photo)

Women pass karwas (pots) seven times among themselves, as part of the Karva Chauth puja, which invokes Goddess Parvati's blessings.

Women worship Goddess Parvati by painting an image of Goddess Gaura and Chauth Mata on the wall or by putting Chauth Mata's image on a paper-based Karva Chauth puja calendar.

Goddesses Gaura and Chauth Mata represent Parvati. To honour Goddess Parvati, say the following mantra, as told in drikpanchang.com:

"Namah Shivayai Sharvanyai Saubhagyam Santati Shubham. Praychch Bhaktiyuktaanaam Narinaam Harvallabhe."

Translation - It means "O beloved consort of Lord Shiva, please grant long life to the husbands of your devoted women and bless them with beautiful sons." After Goddess Gauri, Lord Shiva, Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesha are worshipped.

Women typically worship in groups, reciting and listening to the story of Karva Chauth, also known as the "greatness of Karva Chauth fast".

After the pooja, offer the karva to a Brahmin or a deserving woman. Fill the karva or karak with water or milk, and then place precious stones or money within.

The women should wait for the moon to rise, and to complete their fast, they should worship Lord Chandra and offer him water.

    Karwa Chauth 2025: Vrat Katha

Every year, married Hindu women and those of marriageable age celebrate the festival of Karwa Chauth across India. This year, it is being celebrated on Friday, October 10, 2025.

According to drikpanchang, many years ago, there was a Brahmin named Vedsharma in Indraprasthapur who was married to Leelavati. They had seven sons and one daughter named Veeravati, who was pampered by everyone. After getting married, she observed the tradition of Karwa Chauth and fasted for her husband. Incidentally, she was with her family when she did that and fainted due to weakness.

To help their sister, the brothers hatched a plan. They climbed on the tree of Vat with a sieve and lamp to create an impression that the moon is up and their sister can break the fast. She fell for it but received bad omens at every bite of the food she ate. In the end, the lore culminates in finding the corpse of her husband on reaching home. Seeing him like that, Veeravati wept profusely and blamed herself. On seeing her inconsolable, Goddess Indrani, the wife of God Indra, came to console her.

When the latter asked what she did to deserve such a fate, that, too, on such a day, she was told it happened because Veeravati did not pay her respects to the moon. To make up for it, she fasted every month for a year and finally got her husband back.

Karwa Chauth 2025: Learn the mythological story behind the festival

The earliest instance of wives fasting for husbands' well-being can be traced back to the Mahabharata, when Savitri pleaded with Lord Yama, the god of death, for her husband's soul. Another part of the epic is with the Pandavas and their wife, Draupadi. Arjuna went to the Nilgiris for a few days of prayer and meditation; anxious for his safety, Draupadi sought help from her brother Krishna. He advised her to fast strictly, like Goddess Parvati did for the safety of her husband, Shiva. Draupadi followed it, and Arjuna soon returned home safely. Learn more here.
