So, we decided to start the week by gathering information about this pivotal vitamin, its types, sources, functions, and also understanding who needs vitamin B supplements, and why.

Speaking with indianexpress.com, Dr Chhaya B.E, Consultant Physician, SPARSH Hospital said, “Vitamins are a group of organic compounds that are essential for the normal growth and nutrition of the human body. Essential for the normal functioning of the body, they are required in small quantities in the diet because they cannot be synthesised by the body”.
There are two types of vitamins – fat soluble and water soluble.
Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) are absorbed by fat, while water-soluble vitamins (everything other than these four) are dissolved in water.
The water-soluble vitamins are easily lost (i.e. through urine) and need to be replenished often, whereas the fat-soluble vitamins can be stored in the body — so make sure you don’t take too many through.
B vitamins are a class of water-soluble vitamins that are crucial for the body’s energy production and metabolism. “B vitamins hold significant importance for our overall well-being. They play a crucial role in facilitating the body’s energy production and metabolism from the food we consume. Additionally, it aids in the formation of red blood cells,” Dr Payal Chaudhary, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Rosewalk Healthcare by Rainbow Children’s Hospital told indianexpress.com.
The types of B vitamins include:
Thiamine (B1),
Riboflavin (B2),
Niacin (B3),
Pantothenic acid (B5),
Pyridoxine (B6),
Biotin (B7),
Folate (B9), and
Cobalamin (B12).
“B-group vitamins play an essential roles in converting food into energy, sustaining a healthy nervous system, facilitating red blood cell production, supporting optimal brain function, and contributing to the synthesis of DNA and proteins,” shared Dr Chaudhary.

B-complex: A collection of all B vitamins.

Biotin: Supports healthy hair, skin, and nails.
Thiamine (B1): Vital for energy metabolism and nerve function.
