Prevalence of heart disease among Indians high: Experts

With nearly 100-million affected people,India is on the verge of becoming the 'heart disease capital of the world'.

With nearly 100-million affected people,India is on the verge of becoming the “heart disease capital of the world”,experts warned today.

The disease is having an increasing prevalence among the youth,especially from Punjab,where the mortality rate due to heart ailments is highest in the country,they said.

“The country is set to be the heart disease capital of the world in a few years,” noted Cardiologist Manmohan Singh said while speaking at a function held on the occasion of the ‘World Heart Day’.

Punjabi diet is very rich compared to that of south Indians. It is for this reason that more youths from the state are affected by heart ailments,Singh said.

“We have seen people from Punjab who had migrated to the west had higher prevalence of heart diseases 10-15 years back. Now that same culture has come to our country and today we find the prevalence of this disease has increased manifolds in our country,” he said.

Another Cardiologist Sudhir Verma exhorted people to be aware about the main risk factors and then lead a life accordingly.

“Major risk factors like use of tobacco and alcohol,high blood pressure (hypertension),high cholesterol level,obesity,physical inactivity and unhealthy diet are as prevalent in India as it is in the rest of the world,he said.

Three things for preventing heart diseases are – Eat less fried food,less butter and ghee. Second,exercise daily for around 45 minutes. And third,reduce stress in life,he said.
