There are so many questions surrounding how one should begin their day. While there are no hard and fast rules, drinking water is one of the first tips recommended by experts to hydrate the body. As such, when we came across a post by fitness coach Diksha Chhabra on starting a day with any one detox drink, we were left wondering if it’s actually needed.

“Start with a glass of detox drink like green tea, lukewarm lemon water, cumin-carom water, overnight soaked ginger water, cucumber or lemon infused water,” the post read.

According to Chhabra, a good morning routine can lead to weight loss. “The perfect morning routine will promote wellness and set you up to be successful for the rest of the day. From avoiding social media to drinking a detox drink and listening to music while exercising and then concluding it with a good post-workout meal and snack can lead to a productive/energetic/fruitful day,” said Chhabra.

So, we reached out to experts to understand whether it is necessary to start one’s day with detox or herbal drinks.

Dr Sonal Bhatnagar, senior dietician, Narayana multispecialty hospital, Jaipur shared that whether a morning routine that includes drinking herbal drinks is needed or not depends on individual preferences and goals. “Herbal drinks, such as herbal teas or infusions, are often consumed for their potential health benefits and as a way to start the day on a refreshing note. However, the decision to incorporate them into your routine ultimately depends on personal choice and lifestyle factors,” said Dr Bhatnagar.

Warm water offers a wide array of benefits and the advantages rise when consumed on an empty stomach, said registered dietitian Garima Goyal. “Consuming lukewarm water is a great way to detoxify the body as it removes the accumulated toxins and food remnants from the gut and clears the toxins from the body. The addition of lime juice to lukewarm water gives it a dose of vitamin C and potassium, a great way to boost the immune system,” said Goyal.

According to Dr Bhatnagar, herbal drinks can offer various advantages, including hydration, relaxation, or potential health benefits associated with specific herbs. “For instance, green tea is often consumed for its antioxidants, while chamomile tea is known for its calming properties. Some people find that incorporating herbal drinks into their morning routine helps them feel more energized or promotes a sense of well-being,” described Dr Bhatnagar.

However, it’s important to note that the effectiveness and specific benefits of herbal drinks can vary depending on the individual and the particular herbs consumed. While some people may experience positive effects, others may not notice any significant changes. “Additionally, it’s essential to consider any potential interactions or side effects that certain herbs may have, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or are taking medications,” stressed Dr Bhatnagar.
