South Korean beauty products and practices, better known as K-Beauty, are emerging as winners in the beauty industry but the Chinese aren’t far behind either. Their jade rollers and gua shas have creeped into the beauty routines of multitudes of women — and sometimes, even their partners’. Who said men can’t yearn for chiselled cheekbones?
According to dermatologist Dr Aanchal Panth, gua sha is a traditional Chinese healing method where a flat smooth-edged tool made of jade or quartz is used to apply repeated, unidirectional press stroke. When translated, ‘gua’ means to scratch the skin while ‘sha’ stands for the red rash that appears on one’s skin after said scratching happens.
The Chinese have traditionally used gua shas to treat acute or chronic pain and for mild to severe conditions such as colds, flu, fever, heatstroke, respiratory problems and even musculoskeletal problems such as severe strain, spasm or injury.
When met with the praises people have been singing of this tool, it begs the question: do gua shas really work or will those granite-cutting cheekbones remain far out of your grasp like a mythical unicorn?
Dermatologists have differing opinions on the matter. Dr Panth said while it can go miles in reducing the puffiness on your face, reducing the fat tissue in your face might remain a pipe dream. But Dr Rinky Kapoor, who is the consultant dermatologist and dermato-surgeon at The Esthetic Clinics, Mumbai disagrees. According to her, it can help in contouring and sculpting your jawline and cheekbones. But she warns against expecting instant results. Rome indeed wasn’t built in one day, now, was it?
The reason why gua shas ferociously attack the puffiness on your face is that it stimulates your lymph nodes, which are causing said puffiness and cause them to drain. “Lymph circulation is only possible through muscle movement or face massage through a gua sha,” Dr Kapoor said.
If you’re convinced of the magic gua shas seem to be weaving and are jumping off the deep end, hold your horses for you must learn how to properly use them.
Follow these steps to achieve snatched skin:
*Wash the gua sha tool with water and soap.
*Cleanse your face and apply any serum, face oil, or moisturiser recommended by the doctor. Your skin should be slippery so that there is no irritation while using the tool.
*Hold your tool the correct way. The curved part should stick to the curves of your skin and the flat part should rest on your skin.
*Start at the base of one of the sides of the neck, pulling it up, towards your jaw. Then move to the front of your neck in an upward movement. Do not put too much pressure here, otherwise you will be coughing.
*Next, move to the center of your chin. Scrape it along your jaw line, going towards the bottom of your ears.
*Take the flatter curve of your tool and scrape from the center of your face to massage the cheeks.
*Massage the area under your eyes, pulling it towards the temples.
*Place your tool against your forehead and gently pull it up towards your hairline.
Note: People with acne, any active skin infection, or recurrent herpes should avoid this tool on the face.
