The country is experiencing persistent rains, which have led to an increase in cases of conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, in various states, including New Delhi, Chandigarh, and Gujarat. But what is it? It is the inflammation of the outer white layer of the eye, Dr Dilip Gude, senior consultant physician, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, said.
The expert said that it presents usually angry red sclera (hence the name pink or red eye). “The spread is usually by autoinoculation (infected hands/fingers rubbing eyes) and aerosol spread,” he said.
As we know, one is more likely to develop conjunctivitis in crowded places. “In public transportation, schools, malls, or events, people are in closer proximity to each other, making it easier for the infection to pass from one person to another,” Dr Saurabh Varshney, senior consultant, ophthalmology, Primus Super Speciality Hospital, Delhi said.
Consequently, one needs to take extra precautions to protect themselves from conjunctivitis in such situations. Dr Varshney suggested following these measures:
*Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after touching your face or coming into contact with surfaces in public places. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
*Avoid close contact with infected individuals: If you know someone has conjunctivitis, try to maintain a safe distance from them to reduce the risk of transmission.
*Do not share personal items: Avoid sharing towels, makeup, or any items that may come into contact with the eyes.
*Use hand sanitiser: If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser with at least 60 per cent alcohol to clean your hands.
*Wear glasses: If you usually wear contact lenses, consider switching to glasses during periods of increased risk, as contact lens wear may increase the risk of infection and prolong recovery.
*Avoid rubbing your eyes: Rubbing your eyes can further irritate them and potentially spread the infection to other parts of your eye or to others.
*Stay home if you are infected: If you develop conjunctivitis, avoid going to crowded places, school, or work until your doctor advises it is safe to do so.
*Follow medical advice: If you suspect you have conjunctivitis or experience symptoms such as redness, itching, burning, discharge, or excessive tearing in your eyes, seek medical advice promptly. Following your doctor’s instructions for treatment and hygiene is crucial to prevent further spread.
