No, coconut oil cannot help prevent vaginal infections. Yes, you read that right.

Dr Mitali Rathod, an obstetrician, and gynecologist in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, busted the myth saying that the vagina has a delicate acidic pH that has plenty of bugs and lactic acid that fight back infections. “Oils being emollient hold lots of moisture and can have a detrimental effect on that pH balance,” said Dr Rathod in a post on Instagram.

So, we decided to learn more.

What are vaginal infections?

A vaginal infection is a type of fungal infection that may cause itchiness, irritation, rash, and a burning sensation around the vagina and the vulva (the tissue at the vaginal opening). Vaginal infection can be primarily caused due to the fungus called candida albicans, said Dr Mansi Sharma, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharadi.

Agreeing with Dr Rathod’s statement, Dr Sharma said that the vagina does not need an external application of emollients.

Does coconut oil help?

Coconut oil holds a lot of moisture in it which can potentially affect your pH levels. “One should be alert and cautious while applying or using anything for your intimate areas, as it can mess up your genital health and lead to various complications,” said Dr Sharma.

According to gynaecologist Dr Shobha Gupta, medical director, and IVF specialist from Mother’s Lap IVF Centre New Delhi and Vrindavan, it may temporarily give relief to itching or irritation around the vagina but it does not prevent or keep vaginal infections at bay. “We have limited scientific evidence to support it,” said Dr Gupta.

Also, coconut oil “should not be used as a substitute for prescribed treatments”, especially for infections like bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, chlamydia, or gonorrhea, which require specific medications. “While coconut oil may offer some benefits, it’s important to rely on medically proven treatments for vaginal infections and to seek professional advice for any concerns,” urged Dr Gupta.

Tips to prevent infections

To prevent the chances of vaginal infection, it is necessary to take certain precautions like “avoiding using fancy or chemical-based, soaps, sprays, or hygiene products for the vagina, washing your vagina with clean water at least once a day, wiping your vagina front to back and changing pads at least once or twice a day”, said Dr Sharma.

“Consult a doctor in case of persistent itching and rashes near your vaginal area, as it can be an indication of various underlying health issues including vaginal infection,” said Dr Sharma.
