Barley grass is used all around the world for various cooking purposes. It can be added to soups and broths, and even used to make barley bread. It comes from the leaf of the barley plant. Another way to get powerful nutrition from the plant is by juicing it. Barley grass juice is packed with important nutrients like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, plant compounds, polyphenols, and dietary fibres, which offer many health benefits.
Explaining the same, Dr Ravi Shankerji Kesari, MD-Physician, General Physician, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore said, “Barley grass juice is a nutrient-rich green juice extracted from the young leaves of the barley plant. It is typically made by juicing fresh or freeze-dried barley grass. The grass is harvested before the formation of grains to maximise its nutrient content.”
*Antioxidant properties: Antioxidants play a crucial role in improving heart health and protecting the body against oxidative stress and free radical damage caused by pollution and other environmental factors.
*Promotes weight loss: Barley grass is low in calories and fibre, making it a great addition to a weight loss diet. It helps boost metabolism, thereby aiding in weight loss.
*Regulates blood sugar: With a low glycaemic index, it helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Dietary fibres in barley grass juice also slow down the absorption of blood sugar into the bloodstream and help in managing diabetes.
*Anti-inflammatory content: Barley grass juice contains anti-inflammatory compounds such as vitamin C and dietary fibres, which help reduce inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, asthma and gouts.
*Promotes detoxification: Barley grass juices help detoxify the body and remove toxins, pollutants and other impurities from our system.
*Improves digestive health: Vitamin C, vitamin A and other compounds like phytonutrients in barley grass juice protect our digestive system from free radical damage. The laxative properties of it also improve bowel movements and relieve constipation and other gastric problems such as abdominal pain, gas, bloating and flatulence.
*Strengthens immune system: It boosts immunity by enhancing the production of white blood cells. Due to its antimicrobial properties, barley grass juice protects us from bacterial, viral and fungal infections.
Barley grass juice is generally considered safe when consumed in moderation. However, Dr Kesari noted that some individuals may experience allergic reactions or digestive discomfort. “Due to its high fibre content, it may cause bloating or gas in some people. It is advisable to start with a small amount and observe any adverse reactions,” he said.
He said, “People with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease should avoid barley grass juice as it is derived from barley, which contains gluten. Additionally, pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before consuming it to ensure it is safe for their specific situation.”
Concluding, the expert said that barley grass juice can be included in the diet in various ways. “It is commonly consumed as a shot or mixed into smoothies, juices, or water. Some people also use it as an ingredient in salad dressings or sprinkle it over salads or soups. It is important to follow the recommended dosage and gradually introduce it into the diet to assess individual tolerance and avoid any potential adverse effects.”
