Alia Bhatt has turned into a ‘skintellectual’ and, as such, her sunscreen application routine has evolved over the years. In a skincare video shared by the Gangubai Kathiadwadi actor in 2021, she shared that she uses “little” sunscreen on her face. Fast forward to 2023, in her recent skincare video, the 30-year-old noted that when it comes to sunscreen, “more is more” and can be seen using at least two finger lengths of the product on her face and neck.

Commenting on this change, Dr Jushya Bhatia Sarin, a dermatologist, wrote, “Something changed about Alia’s sunscreen routine. Want in on that secret ? She understood the hack behind applying her sunscreen the right way”.

Stating that“it is never too late to start your sunscreen right”, Dr Sarin shared three ways to wear your sunscreen.

Here are three effective ways to correctly apply your sunscreen

1. Sunscreen should be labelled broad spectrum, which means it protects you from both UVA and UVB rays. “Just SPF is not enough,” the expert said.
2. Use 2 finger lengths for your face and 3 finger lengths for your face and neck. Don’t forget your ears, the back of your neck, the back of your hands, and other exposed body parts.
3. Reapply your sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours even if you have not exposed yourself to the sun because the sweat breaks it down.

Why is it important to wear sunscreen?

Sunscreen is defined as the shield for the skin cells, protecting them from sun damage. Using sunscreen regularly protects the skin from sunburn, sun spots, premature ageing and skin cancer. Sharing the importance of wearing sunscreen, Dr Aneeha Ramesh Babu, Dermatologist, SPARSH Hospital, tells indianexpress.com:

– It helps prevent premature ageing of the skin which can happen due to sun exposure. This could be in the form of age spots and wrinkling of the skin.
– It prevents sunburns which are mostly seen in skin phototypes 1 and 2 i.e fairer skin
– It prevents tanning of skin which is common in skin phototypes 3 to 6 i.e darker skin
– It protects against skin cancers like BCC, melanoma, and SCC. These diseases are not very common in the Indian population.

Everything you need to know about your sunscreen.

Below is everything you need to know about your sunscreen, as shared by Dr Babu.

What is UVA/B?

*UVA/B are a part of the UV spectrum which is the ultraviolet spectrum of the sun rays. The wavelength of UVA would be around 320-400 nanometers. This constitutes 90% of the total UV radiation that is exposed. UVB constitutes less than 10% of the UV radiation which is around 290- 320 nanometers.

*UVA rays are strong during both winter and summer. They are going to penetrate deeper and cause premature ageing of the skin, wrinkling, and age spots.

*UVB is associated with two things – sunburns and skin cancers. These are the strong summer rays that are seen during the mid-day. Hence, we have to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that will protect us from UVA and UVB rays

What is broad-spectrum sunscreen?

A broad-spectrum sunscreen will protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. “UVA rays can penetrate through glass and clouds which are not seen in UVB,” Dr Babu said.

Dr Babu shared that sunscreen needs to be used after face wash. It is important to apply sunscreen at least 30 mins before sun exposure. This helps protect the skin from sun exposure for 2 hours. The right way of application is to reapply sunscreen every two hours.

Which skin type should use what kind of sunscreen?

People with dry skin should go for a cream-based sunscreen. For oily skin, sunscreen gels are preferred.

How much sunscreen should be used?

A dose of 2 milligrams per sq cm is the recommended account, according to the expert. “For the face and the front of the neck, approximately one finger length of sunscreen needs to be applied which is about 4.5 per cent of the body surface area. The measurement of one finger length would be the measurement from the palm to the tip of the index finger.”

Things to keep in mind

*Sunscreens have to be applied even on a rainy or cloudy day because there is some amount of UV exposure taking place.
*Applying an adequate amount of sunscreen is important.
*Daily application of sunscreen is necessary for both men and women.
