Radhikka Madan gave filmmaker-turned-Youtuber Farah Khan a tour of her spacious Mumbai home, during which the Delhi-born and bred actor admitted that she is still a simple girl who swears by some simple habits. For example, she still drinks water from an earthen pot. “Matke ka paani bhi hai. Matke ka paani peekar hum bade huye na. Mummy ne bola ghar sab theek hai…yeh rakho…kitchen me (We consume earthen pot water. We have grown up drinking this; my mother told me to keep this…,)” recalled Madan.
Taking a cue from the 30-year-old’s confession, let’s understand if one should drink water from an earthen pot all round the year.
Dr Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai said that a large number of people often drink matka water. “So, yes, one can drink matka (clay pot) water all year round, and it’s especially helpful during the summer. Matkas naturally cool the water without the need for electricity or refrigeration,” said Dr Agarwal.
The clay has tiny pores that let water slowly evaporate, which cools it down in a healthy, chemical-free way without any problems such as throat infection.
According to Dr Agarwal, it also helps maintain the water’s natural minerals and improves its taste. Drinking matka water is not just refreshing but also gentle on the throat and digestion, unlike very cold fridge water, which can sometimes cause discomfort and throat pain, said Dr Agarwal.
“Cold water from the fridge can cause a cough, a cold, and sinusitis. Even in winter, matka water is safe to drink as long as the room temperature isn’t too cold and the pot is kept clean and washed from time to time. It is imperative to change the water daily to avoid bacterial growth,” said Dr Agarwal.
Always store it in a cool, shaded place and follow hygiene measures. “So, with proper care, matka water is a safe and natural choice all year round,” said Dr Agarwal.
