Known for its distinct flavours, textures, and variety of dishes, Gujarati cuisine is bound to leave everyone licking their fingers. From flavourful sweet dishes to a range of savoury delicacies, there’s no dearth of options to choose from. Looks like Pooja Hegde, too, is a fan of the same as she recently opened up about her favourite Gujarati dish during an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Instagram.
On being asked her favourite Gujarati food, she replied, “Khandvi and dal dhokli.” Posting a picture of homemade khandvi, the actor wrote, “I made this plate of khandvi myself. My mom loves it, so, learned to make it for her.”
For the unversed, khandvi is a popular Gujarati snack made from a mixture of gram flour, yoghurt, and spices. The mixture is spread out on a flat surface, rolled into thin layers, and then cut into bite-sized pieces. Khandvi is known for its unique texture, which is soft, silky, and smooth. Dal Dhokli, on the other hand, is a one-pot dish which is made by simmering bite-sized pieces of whole wheat flour dough (dhokli) in a spicy lentil stew (dal) until they are cooked through and tender. The dal is typically made with pigeon peas (toor dal) but can also be made with other lentils such as split green gram (moong dal) or split yellow gram (chana dal).
During the QnA session, Pooja also opened up about her love for the humble curd rice. When asked if she likes to relish this dish, she replied, “Yes, with some pickle on the side.”
The actor added that she especially enjoys curd rice when she’s tired or sick. “Here’s a recent photo of an exhausted me digging into some on the way back home #comfortfood,” she wrote, alongside a picture of her eating curd rice on a flight.
Curd rice is a popular South Indian dish that is made with cooked rice, yoghurt, and a variety of spices and seasonings. It is not only delicious but also extremely delicious as it is a good source of carbohydrates, protein, and probiotics.
