The most noticeable difference lies in their texture and presentation, said Kaur.
Panjiri is a crumbly, dry mixture with a powdery consistency. It’s meant to be eaten by the spoonful, making it more of a snack or supplement than a traditional dessert.
Pinni, on the other hand, is shaped into round, firm balls (laddoos). Its compact and dense texture makes it easier to handle and enjoy as an individual portion.
Ingredients and composition
While their ingredients overlap, Kaur noted panjiri and pinni vary in composition and richness.
Panjiri often includes a variety of dry fruits, seeds, warm spices like ginger powder, and even herbal additions such as gond (edible gum). This nutrient-packed blend is ideal for postpartum recovery and winter nourishment.
Pinni, by contrast, has a simpler formula. It balances flour, ghee, and sugar to maintain its shape, with fewer additional ingredients compared to panjiri.

Consumption and purpose
Their usage also differs based on tradition and purpose, according to Kaur.
Panjiri is primarily consumed as a health supplement or snack, renowned for its warming properties and restorative benefits, especially for postpartum women and during cold winters.
Pinni is more associated with celebrations and festivals like Lohri and Diwali. While nutritious, it is often enjoyed as a dessert rather than a supplement.
While panjiri is loose, crumbly, and eaten with a spoon, pinni is compact, firm, and consumed as a ladoo. Both, however, are steeped in tradition and are beloved for their rich flavours and health benefits, making them wintertime favorites.
